KM Governance CoP
Knowledge Management Education Forum is an open community of individuals and organizations who are interested in advancing knowledge management education and professional status. For those new to the KMEF community, you can find the archives at
Phase 1 (online webinars by thought leaders) and Phase 2 (panels and interactive discussions) of KMEF raised important questions about the future direction of knowledge management profession – including functions and roles and responsibilities, competencies, model curricula, credentialing and certification. What are impressive are the inclusive, thoughtful, considerate, consultative, open and well-grounded discussions that have transpired in the first two phases. KMEF Phase 3 continues this dialog and this positive tone of the conversation.
The KMEF enters Phase 3 – expanding and supporting Communities of Practice (CoPs) -- to address the key questions identified by KMEF participants. Four initial Communities of Practice are forming and we invite you to join or monitor the community events and activities. Several individuals have stepped up to support the Communities of Practice and their contact information can be found on the wikis for the Cops. The four CoPs are listed below with their url’s:

Each of the Communities of Practice has a “space” on the KM@KSU wiki where they can cultivate their community and determine how best to carry forward the discussions that began in Spring, 2011. Wiki support will include support for online meetings, open or community-focused webinars, listservs for discussions, a collaboration environment, and very shortly – document stores.
Expectations for Participation and Ways of Working:
Anyone, anywhere, regardless of their credentials and experience can join this discussion. Progress is made incrementally and as a group effort. In true KM fashion, each community defines its own conventions and ways of working. In general, communities are encouraged to seek broad input and to promote their work to the larger KM community. Similarly, communities are encouraged to reference, integrate, build upon and synthesize existing thought and knowledge. A draft “Guiding Principles (GP)” document should be provided to each community as a starting point. Each community can expand or edit the GP’s to suit their conventions. Each community should publish its own GP’s as a first activity.
Expectations for Results:
The most important result of the communities of practice is to continue and sustain the dialog that began in March 2011.
There are two formal outputs expected from each community:
(1) A briefing to the larger KMEF community no later than end November, 2011 on the state of the community’s work; and
(2) The key questions and issues that should be carried forward for KMEF 2012. At that time, communities can decide to renew their activities, or disband.
As the communities move forward, new issues and questions will come up. New Communities of Practice can be formed at any time as long as they are focused on education for Knowledge Management.
Guiding Principles for Communities of Practice
Each KMEF Community of Practice is expected to:
Self-manage through the establishment of a governance model, community conventions, a code of conduct , shared leadership and facilitation, and open membership
ensure that it has open and public membership guidelines
ensure that there is open communication among all members of the group
ensure that the thought leaders on their topics are invited to participate
afford each and every member opportunities to grow and learn from others – in an open, productive and constructive environment
continuously grow their membership and invite participation from outside the immediate community – to build broad based support and to ensure broad advice and review
make it easy for members to contribute to the community as their interest and experience allow
Develop, record and communicate a vision around its core question
Report on its progress against its goals at the end of November 2011, and preferably more frequently and sooner than that;
Propose a set of questions and issues to be addressed in KMEF 2012
KMEF CoP’s strive to:
actively work through road blocks, challenges and problems with the goal of “resolution” - to identify and reach consensus and agreement
support constructive disagreement while maintaining a respectful and professional environment
synthesize existing and create new knowledge through collaboration and joint learning
view problems and breakdowns not as causes for alarm, but as opportunities for creativity
welcome new ideas and plan for growth and evolution of their topics in the future
practice active listening and productive inquiry
to the best of its members abilities and interests, define community products, outcomes and timelines
design and support activities and events which retain members’ interests
KMEF CoP Facilitators are responsible for:
guiding each community and for communicating activities and progress, or need for support and advice, to the two co-leads at George Washington University and Kent State University.
Communicating with the other Communities of Practice to ensure cross-pollination of ideas and alignment of outputs and outcomes.
